The Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was celebrated for his distinctive style, combining decorative patterns, bold use of shimmering gold leaf, and sensual subject matter. Klimt’s most famous works embody a fusion of opulence and intimacy, often exploring themes of love, femininity, and the cycle of life. Influenced by Byzantine mosaics, Japanese art, and Art Nouveau, Klimt blurred the boundary between fine art and ornamentation. ‘The Kiss’ remains one of the most popular pieces of art ever created and Klimt’s legacy endures as a radical innovator who redefined modern portraiture and symbolism. He said of himself “Even when I have to write a simple letter I’m scared stiff, as if faced with looming seasickness”. So, clearly not a note writer.
