John Bauer was a Swedish artist and illustrator whose enchanting work continues to capture the imagination. Born in 1882, Bauer became especially well known for his illustrations of Swedish fairy tales, where forests, trolls, princesses, and mysterious creatures seemed to come alive on the page.

What makes Bauer’s art so special is its gentle, dreamlike atmosphere. His characters often appear small against towering trees and shadowy landscapes, giving his pictures a wonderful sense of mystery and wonder. At the same time, there is warmth and tenderness in his work, particularly in the way he portrayed children, woodland creatures, and magical figures.

Bauer’s most famous work was created for Among Gnomes and Trolls, a Swedish annual first published in 1907. His illustrations helped give the stories their distinctive magical character and made him one of Sweden’s best-loved artists.

Although Bauer died tragically in 1918, his artistic legacy has endured. His work still feels fresh because it invites viewers to slow down and imagine another world hidden just beyond the trees. With its rich colours, expressive figures, and quiet sense of magic, Bauer’s art reminds us how powerful a simple story and a beautiful picture can be.
