Bringing the wild beauty of the Scottish Highlands to life, a stag stands proudly against rugged mountains. Powerful antlers, alert eyes and strong stance render him magnificent, the true king of an ancient kingdom.
Painted in 1851 by Edward Landseer, this iconic painting was originally commissioned for the Palace of Westminster by Parliament and the House of Lords…who refused to pay.
Lord Londesborough bought the masterpiece privately after it was dropped from the parliamentary commission and it passed through several private art collectors and dealers through the late 19th and early 20th centuries until Pears Soap purchased the painting in 1916 for advertising use.
The image continued to be used extensively by Dewar’s whisky for marketing and Scotch whisky branding. Now in public ownership and on permanent display in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, The Monarch of the Glen continues to be a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike. A must-see if you visit Auld Reekie.
